Suspecting it might have a nest near by, I finally went to look for it today, and there it was against a pilar and woven among Clematis and Jasminum branches.
I wish all the best to the new family.

I had never heard about the american writer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Crews">Harry Crews</a> and then I read this quote on Facebook:
<i>"You have to go to considerable trouble to live differently from the way the world wants you to live. That's what I've discovered about writing. The world doesn't want you to do a damn thing. If you wait till you got time to write a novel or time to write a story or time to read the hundred thousands of books you should have already read -- if you wait for the time, you'll never do it. Cause there ain't no time; world don't want you to do that. World wants you to go to the zoo and eat cotton candy, preferably seven days a week." -- Harry Crews</i>
Later, in bed, I started reading this book that had arrived in the mail on the morning of the same day: "Reading like a writer", by Francine Prose. On page 3 I read another reference to Harry Crews: <i>"Though writers have learned from the masters in a formal, methodical way -- Harry Crews has described taking apart a Graham Green novel to see how many chapters it contained, how much time it covered, how Green handled pacing, tone, and point of view -- the truth is that this sort of education more often involves a kind of osmosis." </i>Jaime Brazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17460189205304531210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192292633122262410.post-20938614585390963192013-03-04T08:46:00.000-08:002013-03-04T08:46:29.214-08:00St. Petersburg ReviewMy short short story "Arsuaga" was published in the St. Petersburg Review, issue 4/5. It´s situated at the mouth of the Mondego river. I once saw an old english print depicting the landind of british troops coming to help the portuguese fight (and defeat) the Napoleon armies, and the then small fishing village was named "Mondego Bay" by the british, which sounds fine too.

I went to visit Casa do Paço, an old palace from the XVII century, famous for the Delft tiles on the walls of three rooms. Nobody knows exactly who put them there. They might have come from a shipwreck. The rooms have no furniture and the display of so many small, beautifully detailed tiles gives it an air of modernity, with the stress in repetition. Ai Weiwei ehxibition of milions of ceramic sunflower seeds, and other recent such exhibitions come to mind.

He mixes art, architecture and Nature. The landscapes are from old masters and the delicate collages of protecting domes remind me of the <a href="http://www.edenproject.com/whats-it-all-about">Eden Project </a>. This paintings show a sense of respect and protection for Nature and also for old traditional forms of art like watercolor.

Last Sept. 17 I was watching a program called "Talking Germany" on DW-TV, showing an interview with german street artist Jim Avignon. Towards the end of the program, the reporter said he would give a poster book by Jim Avignon (with a drawing he made in the first page, during the program) to raffle among the viewers, who contacted the program. I sent an email and some weeks latter I was contacted back: I had won the it! Some photos of the first pages (total of 40 pages):<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My friend Paul Bakker (see link on the left) made this portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, using bottle caps he colects when he´s out walking the dogs.
Under any circumstances, a Queen is a Queen is a Queen.

On the dusty shelves there was this amazing display of popular potery. Side by side you had Jesus Christ, Buddhas, soldiers, bulls, phallus, angels, football players, dunks, Chuck Norris, swallows, cups, saints, couples, plates, etc.
This reminded me of a famous work from 2008 by british artist Damien Hirst apptly called <a href="http://www.damienhirst.com/nothingness">"Nothingness"</a> which consists of a medical cabinet containing pharmaceutical packaging, similar to those you can see in any pharmacy.
But the shelves in this ceramist`s atelier/shop are infinetly more interesting, more aesteticaly stimulating than Hirst´s cabinet.
By the way, Damien Hirst´skull covered in diamonds is perhaps the epitome of western art. That´s where the history of Western Art comes to rest.

I even saw pastry in the shape of boobs and pricks in the window of some bakery shops. See photos:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HlqWy3Azb7M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Suddenly the night has grown colder.
The god of love preparing to depart.
Alexandra hoisted on his shoulder,
They slip between the sentries of the heart.
Upheld by the simplicities of pleasure,
They gain the light, they formlessly entwine
And radiant beyond your widest measure
They fall among the voices and the wine.
It's not a trick, your senses all deceiving,
A fitful dream, the morning will exhaust
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving.
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost.
Even though she sleeps upon your satin
Even though she wakes you with a kiss.
Do not say the moment was imagined
Do not stoop to strategies like this.
As someone long prepared for this to happen,
Go firmly to the window. Drink it in.
Exquisite music. Alexandra laughing.
Your firm commitments tangible again.
And you who had the honor of her evening,
And by the honor had your own restored
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving
Alexandra leaving with her lord.
Even though she sleeps upon your satin
Even though she wakes you with a kiss.
Do not say the moment was imagined
Do not stoop to strategies like this.
As someone long prepared for the occasion
In full command of every plan you wrecked
Do not choose a coward's explanation
that hides behind the cause and the effect.
And you who were bewildered by a meaning
Whose code was broken, crucifix uncrossed
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving.
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost.
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving.
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost.

Baldy zen centerThis is from Arte tv, a french-german pbs. I once knew a woman who was at the Mt. Baldy when Leonard Cohen was there.
Next October, 7, I´ll go see a concert by LC in Lisbon.

At first glance the photo looks like it has been made in China´s great wall, but on closer look it reveals a small medieval village on top of a hill (Civita di Bagnoregio). But the most striking is the caption on top of the page:"The State is the actuality of the ethical idea". This sounded familiar, I knew it was from some german philosopher, (...it´s by <a href="http://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/hegel/works/pr/prstate.htm">Hegel</a>) and I happen to know it in portuguese :"O Estado é a encarnação da ideia moral". I´m not a specialist in Philosophy, I probably I read it before in some article about the economic crises, welfare state, liberal economy, deregulation, that kind of stuff, and it stuck in my mind.
Now, what is this quote doing in an ad to clothes, is beyond me. I don´t see any relation. Did the marketing guys just open a book of philosophical quotes and choose the first they saw?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
